US President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen signed a security agreement. The document will allow the United States to increase its military presence in Greenland.
Donald Trump noted that the United States, under the terms of the agreements, will have full control over the security of Greenland on a permanent basis. “We will have the full capacity to do what is necessary to protect the American continent, as well as Europe and other regions,” he said.
The three leaders signed the agreement at the UN General Assembly in New York. This deal is good for the United States, for Greenland, for Denmark and for NATO. And therefore also for Europe, said Mrs. Frederiksen. “You don’t want your adversaries to get too close,” she told Trump. I totally agree with that. We seek to ensure that they will not be allowed to gain any control or significant influence in Greenland.”.
The conflict between the United States and Denmark over the status of Greenland (officially part of the Danish kingdom on the rights of autonomy) began in the winter of 2025. The US president has repeatedly said he plans to include Greenland in the US in the interests of national security. Donald Trump announced an agreement with Denmark and Greenland on September 19. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio explained that Denmark and Greenland do not have enough funds to ensure the security of the island in the event of an attack.
