Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said she was ready for dialogue for the sake of fruitful relations between Japan and the DPRK. She also noted the need for a speedy resolution of the problem of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korean intelligence in the 1970s.
“I have a determination to dialogue and concrete actions to establish mutual and fruitful relations,” Takaichi said at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
The main demand of Tokyo against Pyongyang remains the solution of the issue of abduction of Japanese citizens by North Korean special services. In 2002, the North Korean authorities officially confirmed 13 such cases, allowing five victims to return home. In May 2014, the parties agreed to re-investigate the incidents, but the commission eventually stopped working on Pyongyang’s decision.
In March last year, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Yo-jong said that Pyongyang refuses any contacts with Japan. One of the reasons she called the position of Tokyo on the issue of abducted citizens.
