Russia maintains contacts with the Syrian authorities on the future of Russian bases in the country, said the press Secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov. The Kremlin expects the parties to reach an agreement.

During the press call, Mr. Peskov was asked to comment on the words of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa about the desire of the authorities “to ensure that there are no foreign military bases in Syria.” “We hope that we will continue to be able, together with our Syrian interlocutors, to find understanding on the most difficult issues,” the Kremlin spokesman said.

In August, Russia and Syria signed a memorandum of understanding on the reorganization of the Russian military presence in the Arab Republic. According to the document, Russian military bases created under the regime of Bashar al-Assad have acquired the status of joint training centers. Moscow-owned civilian facilities, such as the airport in Khmeimim and berth No. 4 in the port of Tartus, came under the control of the Syrian authorities.
