US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the UN General Assembly in New York. The politicians discussed the conflict in Ukraine and bilateral relations between Russia and the United States. This was reported by the press service of the US State Department.
The talks lasted about 50 minutes in a format closed to the press. During a briefing after a meeting with the Russian minister, the US secretary of state noted that both the Russian and Ukrainian sides are interested in a proposal to suspend strikes on energy facilities and grain exports. Mr Rubio said a temporary ceasefire or restrictions on targets for strikes would not end the conflict but would help ease several international problems.
This was the fifth meeting between Marco Rubio and Sergey Lavrov since 2025. The last time the head of the Russian foreign Ministry met with Mr. Rubio during the ASEAN summit in Manila in July. Mr. Lavrov informed his American counterpart of information from the battlefields in Ukraine and said about the destabilizing influence of European countries.
