Former German intelligence chief Hanning arrested in espionage case
Investigators have detained the former head of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) August Hanning on suspicion of espionage and treason. The arrest warrant for Mr Hanning was approved by the investigating judge of the Federal Supreme Court in Karlsruhe.

The arrest warrant for Mr Hanning was approved by the investigating judge of the Federal Supreme Court in Karlsruhe. August Hanning is charged with intelligence activities in favor of foreign intelligence services, collection of state secrets and attempted treason. He was detained on October 6. The case also involves Mr Hanning's alleged accomplice, former senior BND official Manfred D.
According to the investigation, in the spring of 2010, August Hanning and Manfred D. agreed to regularly transfer intelligence data to the BND. In total, Mr. Hanning gained access to more than 2,000 documents, many of which contained classified intelligence information. August Hanning once used classified information to prepare material for a foreign intelligence officer.
