The number of cases of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has ceased to decline, writes sb.by.
According to Bloomberg, weekly rates of confirmed infections and deaths have increased for the third consecutive week after falling to a low about a month ago. On Saturday, 97 new cases were reported - the most since October 3 - including 30 people who have already died in their communities.
In North Kivu, 48 cases have been reported, up from 42 in Ituri, where the outbreak was declared more than five months ago. Nearly half of the infections and deaths reported in the six days to October 18 occurred outside Ituri.
“Failure to prevent transmission increases the risk of further spread outside the Congo. Kenya reported eight cases involving an infected traveler from the Congo, including three health workers, prompting countries in the region to step up surveillance and border checks.
Limited treatment options and difficulty getting suspected patients to facilities continued to hamper the Ebola response.
The situation was particularly acute in North Kivu, where wards for suspected patients were almost completely overcrowded and one in five hospitalized patients were treated outside designated facilities for Ebola treatment.
