Alex Gonzalez, Secretary for Peace and Human Rights of the Nariño Department, said several people were under rubble as a result of the collapse of rocks; these people worked in the mine, and so far there are information about nine dead. He said this on the television channel Caracol.

Search and rescue operations are continuing at the site, which are complicated by inaccessible terrain and security problems. According to Caracol, the total death toll could reach 12-15.

The mine, which mined the gold illegally, is located in the municipality of Santa Barbara.
