Infrastructure deficit in the Netherlands could reach €80 billion
The government of the Netherlands is preparing to review the financing of transport projects against the background of deterioration of infrastructure and lack of funds, which by 2040 will be the most expensive.

The Dutch government is preparing to review funding for transport projects amid depreciation of infrastructure and a shortage of funds, which could reach €80 billion by 2040. It's from sb.by.

According to the newspaper Algemeen Dagblad, by the end of this week the Cabinet will announce which projects will receive funding in the next eight years, and which will remain without funds. Much of the infrastructure is worn out: bridges have to be closed due to cracks, locks are intermittent, roads need to be updated. At the same time, the regions are seeking the construction of new railway lines and the expansion of highways.
Earlier agreements to upgrade infrastructure do not guarantee funding if final contracts have not yet been signed.
As part of the governing parties’ coalition agreement, the government has already earmarked nearly €10 billion in additional infrastructure funding through 2030, and when presenting the budget, announced another €5.1 billion through 2040. However, the funding gap will remain.
