France reported on Thursday, October 22, the first case of infection of a hospital patient with the Chamond virus, which is usually found in livestock. The man died, although the authorities said that there was no danger to the population as a whole, writes sb.by.
The victim is believed to have been bitten by a midge carrying the virus in eastern France, which has spread to animals in the spring and summer of this year.
“A man has been hospitalized in Lyon with an unrelated serious disorder,” a French health ministry spokesman said.
The victim was in his 60s and lived in the Lyon area. The World Health Organization said it was in contact with French authorities over the outbreak.
“Based on the available information and knowledge of the transmission of closely related viruses, this is an isolated case of human disease and is currently unlikely to lead to a wider spread,” the Geneva-based WHO said.
