The exposition “Temples at Dawn” was opened in the House of Youth of Yevpatoria: it included about 60 paintings and graphic works of the participants of the project of the same name. The authors of the paintings were the winners of the interregional competition, experts and members of the project team, reports “Crimean newspaper”.
It was supported by the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives, the Ministry of Culture of the Lipetsk region and the Crimea, as well as the Metropolitans of Simferopol and Crimean Tikhon and Lipetsk and Zadon Arseny. The organizers sought to show how young artists appeal to traditions and spiritual heritage. The works introduce the temple architecture of the two regions.
As part of the project, plein airs were held in the Lipetsk region and the Crimea. From 5 to 11 August, artists under the guidance of mentors wrote sketches of the temples of Yelets, Lipetsk and Zadonsk, studied watercolor and oil pastel, met with artists and representatives of the clergy.
Crimean plein air was held from 4 to 12 October. Participants worked in Bakhchisarai, Simferopol, Yalta, including in Livadia, Feodosia and other municipalities. They mastered painting with oil, acrylic and watercolor, attended master classes and excursions, met with leaders of public opinion.
The project manager and member of the Union of Artists of Russia Maria Shevchuk noted the variety of artistic solutions in the exposition. “The participants interpreted the image of the Crimean churches in their own way,” she stressed. According to Shevchuk, the artists used different color and compositional approaches, conveying the atmosphere of dawn plein airs, the sounds of the city and nature.
PR-manager of the project, member of the Union of Artists of Russia and the Youth Council under the Ministry of Culture of the Crimea Tatyana Grishchenko said that the open airs on the peninsula helped participants to feel the unity of the Crimeans around Orthodox themes.
At the opening of the clergy of St. Nicholas Cathedral of Evpatoria, Priest Dmitry Chkana reminded that the temple is not only an architectural structure, but also the house of God. He noted that the exhibition combines creativity and faith, and the creation of works at dawn required early rises from artists. The priest expressed hope that the exposition will encourage believers to visit the temple, and help non-believers to see the beauty of the temple architecture.
