On Wednesday, October 21, according to the national calendar, the day of Triphon and Pelagia is celebrated, which in Russia was associated with preparations for the onset of winter. On this day, it was customary to get warm clothes, check household supplies and prepare the farm for the cold. It was believed that timely preparation will help to avoid troubles in the winter months.
There are several folk signs associated with the date. If on October 21 the trees still retain their foliage, they expected the late onset of winter. Low-floating clouds foreshadowed cooling, and morning fog - relatively warm weather. The birds also tried to determine the upcoming changes: if they stayed closer to housing, it was considered a sign of approaching cold weather. For the residents of Sochi, such beliefs are predominantly culturally important because of the mild climate of the Black Sea coast.
There were also popular prohibitions. Tryphon and Pelageya tried not to be lazy, not to postpone important economic affairs and not to leave the house unprepared for the winter. It was not recommended to quarrel with relatives, spread gossip and make rash purchases. Conflicts were believed to lead to protracted disagreements, and wastefulness to financial difficulties. These prohibitions belong to folk traditions and have no scientific basis.
