Endovenous laser coagulation (EVLC) is the gold standard for the treatment of varicose veins: the method is low-traumatic, fast and effective. But this is still a surgical intervention, so he has strict contraindications. Russian phlebologist Maxim Abasov told when EVLK can not do, writes sb.by.

According to Maxim Abasov, there are absolute contraindications:
Acute deep vein thrombosis. If there is already a fresh blood clot in the deep veins, the closure of the superficial vein will lead to stagnation of blood and severe edema. First, thrombosis is treated, and EVLK is discussed only months after the restoration of vein patency. Pregnancy and lactation. Due to hormonal changes and an increased risk of thrombosis, planned surgery is not carried out during this period. Treatment of varicose veins is planned either before pregnancy, or 3-6 months after the end of breastfeeding. Impossibility of early activation. After EVLK, the patient must walk immediately. In people in a supine state, with severe heart failure, paralysis or after a stroke, the risk of complications increases dramatically - such patients choose another treatment tactic. Severe concomitant diseases (for example, active oncology). First of all, the underlying disease is treated, and only then do varicose veins. Critical ischemia due to severe atherosclerosis of the arteries of the lower extremities. If the blood flow is so disturbed that a person cannot walk 50 meters without pain, the arteries, not the veins, are operated on first.
In addition, Maxim Abasov added, there are relative contraindications when you need to prepare or wait:
- First, infections and inflammation of the skin in the area of the operation (fungus, eczema, erysopathy, and the like). First, treat the skin, achieve remission (usually 2-4 weeks), then make EVLK. Secondly, decompensated chronic diseases: uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes mellitus with high glycated hemoglobin, exacerbation of bronchial asthma. The doctor adjusts therapy, and after stabilization of the condition, surgery becomes possible. Thirdly, obesity is high. Not a ban in itself, but it increases risks and complicates the procedure. A phlebologist may recommend losing weight or choosing another treatment.
Maxim Abasov explained what to do if there are contraindications:
- Do not self-medicate and do not panic. Sign up for a consultation with a phlebologist: the doctor will conduct an ultrasound of the veins, collect anamnesis and make an individual plan. You may need to take additional tests, consult with related specialists or just wait a while.
