Age-related macular degeneration is one of the most serious eye diseases that can lead to a significant decrease in vision. About the forms of pathology and what habits help protect the retina, told the Russian ophthalmologist Anna Shipunova, writes sb.by.

According to the type of course, age-related macular degeneration is divided into early and late phases, according to the type of available clinical manifestations - into "dry" and "wet" forms, the doctor notes:
“The disease begins with a slower but insidious dry form. Its main danger is that over time it can transform into a “wet” form. In this case, pathological vessels begin to germinate in the central zone of the retina. They are fragile and cause swelling and hemorrhages, leading to rapid and sharp loss of visual acuity.”.
It is impossible to completely cure degeneration, you can only suspend this process, the specialist added. Prevention therefore plays a key role. The doctor highlights several mandatory eye protection measures:
UV protection. Sun exposure is one of the main triggers of macular degeneration. Sunglasses with a high-quality UV filter are necessary for everyone in the summer. Even if you wear transparent diopter glasses for vision correction, make sure their lenses have built-in UV protection.
Fighting blue light from gadgets : People who spend more than 8 hours a day watching monitors and on phones are subjecting the retina to additional trauma. Although modern technology minimizes harmful radiation, the total dose of blue spectrum still penetrates the cornea and the lens. The ophthalmologist recommends using special glasses with filters even for those with perfect vision.
⇒ Proper nutrition. To maintain a healthy retina, it is important to include foods with lutein and zeaxanthin in the menu. The specialist advises to eat greens, vegetables and chicken egg yolk at least 4-5 times a week, and if necessary, take vitamin complexes prescribed by a doctor.
