Neurologist explained what is the connection between snoring, apnea and diabetes

Neurologist of the highest qualification category, somnologist of the RKMC of the Office of the President of the Republic of Belarus, Candidate of Medical Sciences Alexei Malkov on the air of the project “School of Diabetes” on the YouTube channel “SWATCH AND LIVY” told about the connection between snoring, apnea and diabetes.

Alexey Malkov explained how snoring, apnea and diabetes are related:

Apnea is a disease that causes intermittent or shallow breathing during sleep. During the night, sleep is interrupted because breathing stops. And this can happen several times a night. A person loses his tongue, there are snoring sounds, the root of the tongue rattles.

The development of diabetes mellitus provokes a number of health problems. It is noticed that snoring or obstructive sleep apnea in diabetes is more common than usual.

“Apnea can be the cause of obesity,” said the doctor. Against the background of the syndrome itself, oxygen saturation of the blood decreases. And the body, thinking that it is starving, begins to store fat as a natural metabolite for the breakdown of oxygen. Hence the fullness. Against the background of excess weight, hyperglycemia occurs. Accordingly, apnea is one of the provoking factors for the occurrence of diabetes.

If the patient is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, the risk of sleep disturbances due to night stops of breathing increases. It is estimated that about 50% of people with type 2 diabetes have obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

- In patients with diabetes mellitus at night, the urge to urinate is frequent, Aleksey Malkov warned. - That's why I wake up a lot. Also, against the background of hyperglycemia, anxious dreams and heavy thoughts occur. A man can't sleep for long. Diabetes mellitus affects cognitive function, reducing concentration and causing pathological sleepiness.

It can also worsen the course of the underlying disease and disrupt well-being during the daytime hours. If sleep is intermittent, the person does not get enough sleep, during the day he is scattered, which increases the risk of accidents and injuries.

- If snoring and apnea are not treated, then intermittent breathing and reduced sleep quality may lead to a higher risk of health problems, the neurologist emphasized.

Caused respiratory disorders that provoke tissue hypoxia, they threaten the development of cardiac diseases, serious metabolic disorders and complications - heart attack, stroke, heart attack. Endocrinologist explained how and how to reduce the glycemic index of products tyshkevich@sb.by
