British tourist dies trying to save sons while swimming with mask and pipe in Bahamas

A British woman died in the Bahamas trying to save her two sons, who were carried away by the current while they were swimming with a mask and a pipe, writes The Guardian.
The Royal Bahamas Police said it had launched an investigation into the death of a 36-year-old woman on Tuesday.
Police said they believed the woman was swimming with a mask and a pipe with her husband and two sons near the southern tip of North Bimini Island when a strong current reportedly claimed both children.
Police said that while trying to rescue her boys, “the woman was also carried away by the current.” The children were later rescued from the water.
The Foreign Office said it was in contact with the woman's family and providing support.
Bimini is a small group of islands located between the largest island of the Bahamas Andros and Miami in the United States. This is the closest point of the Bahamas to the US mainland, The Guardian explains.
These islands are best known for being the home of Ernest Hemingway and for being home to the world’s leading shark research center.
In a statement posted on social media, the Royal Bahamas Police said: According to a preliminary report, shortly after 10 a.m., Alice Town Police Station received information that a woman was not responding at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. The police responded and learned on arrival that the woman had been taken to a local clinic for medical care, where a local doctor subsequently pronounced her dead despite all attempts to save her life. According to preliminary information, the deceased was swimming with a mask and a pipe with her husband and two sons near the southern tip of the island, when a strong current reportedly claimed both children. Trying to save her sons, the woman was also carried away by the current. She was later recovered from the water and taken to a ferry dock where she was reportedly given artificial respiration. At the moment, there is no suspicion of a crime.”.
An autopsy will be carried out to help determine the exact cause of death, authorities said in a statement.
A spokesman for the British Foreign Office, Commonwealth and Development, said: Our thoughts are with the family of a British woman who died in the Bahamas. We are in contact with the local authorities and support her family.”.
