Issues of road safety and prospects for the upcoming winter season were discussed during a working meeting of the director of the Petrozavodsk branch of FKU "North-West" Dmitry Jos, the head of the UGIBDD of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for Karelia Dmitry Baranov and heads of contractor organizations of road workers.
The main goal of the meeting is to minimize seasonal risks for all road users.
“Our task is not to state shortcomings, but to act on the prevention of accidents,” said the head of the Karelian State Traffic Inspectorate.
Representatives of the organizations that will deal with the winter maintenance of federal roads of Karelia reported on the stocks of deicing materials, the degree of readiness of special equipment and the preparation of personnel for the mode of operation in the conditions of sharply changing weather conditions of the coming cold season. The issues of logistics and operational communication, especially during the announcement of storm warnings, were discussed separately, and the director of the Petrozavodsk branch of the North-West FKU reminded contractors of the need for constant monitoring of changes in weather conditions.
“Frosts have begun in the republic, so deicing filling is often needed now,” said Dmitry Jos.
This winter, more than 190 units of specialized equipment will work on the federal roads of Karelia - combined road vehicles, motor graders, rotary snow plows, excavators, loaders, bulldozers and tractors with attachments. For deicing of the tracks, contractors should accumulate almost 150 thousand tons of sand salt mixture at their sites by the end of October.
At the same time, we note that the vast majority of road accidents, especially in winter, are the result of gross violations of traffic rules by drivers and pedestrians. In the list of causes of serious accidents, the leader is exceeding the permissible speed limit and violating the rules for leaving the oncoming traffic lane.
During winter trips, in addition to using specialized tires, drivers should be aware of the danger of sharp maneuvers - braking, cornering and acceleration, which often cause skidding. It is necessary to be careful when driving near pedestrian crossings and places where educational institutions are located. Winter time is difficult for pedestrians, who when crossing the roadway can slip and fall, and in blizzards and snowfall, especially in the dark, poorly visible on the road.
