Scientists have found an effective tool to improve the quality of sleep
The smell of essential oil from the roots of Japanese chinoki cypress can positively affect night rest
The smell of essential oil from the roots of Japanese hinoki cypress can positively affect a night’s rest. Scientists have found that its aroma promotes deeper sleep and may reduce the frequency of nighttime awakenings. The results are published in the Journal of Wood Science.
The experiment involved 12 women aged 35 to 60 years. For two weeks, experts watched their sleep at home. Part of the nights the participants spent with the aroma of hinoki oil, and some without it. Electroencephalography, wearable devices and questionnaires were used to evaluate.
The researchers noticed significant changes within a week. Women have increased slow-wave brain activity associated with the phase of deep sleep. By the end of the experiment, the participants were also less likely to wake up at night and reported less sleepiness in the morning and better recovery from fatigue.
The aroma of the oil was mainly described by volunteers as woody, pleasant and relaxing. The authors consider the results promising, but the small number of participants means that more large-scale studies will be needed to confirm the effect.
