Scientists have found that can help reduce pain in osteoarthritis of the knee
A slight adjustment to the position of the feet when walking can relieve pain in osteoarthritis of the knee joint and slow down some signs of cartilage damage

A slight adjustment to the position of the feet when walking can relieve pain in osteoarthritis of the knee joint and slow down some signs of cartilage damage. This conclusion was reached by American researchers from the universities of Utah, New York and Stanford. The results of a one-year clinical trial are published in the scientific journal The Lancet Rheumatology.
The study involved 68 people with mild to moderate disease. Scientists studied their gait using special sensors, cameras and a treadmill, and then individually selected the angle of turning the feet. Some patients were advised to turn their socks inwards and others outwards. This approach allowed to redistribute the load on the affected area of the knee.
Half of the volunteers completed a six-week training course and continued to follow the recommendations themselves. A year later, participants in this group reported an average reduction in pain of 2.5 points on a ten-point scale, while in the control group the indicator was 1.3 points. Additional examination revealed a slower deterioration in one of the indicators of the condition of articular cartilage.
The authors of the study believe that personalized gait settings can be a useful addition to the treatment of osteoarthritis without the use of drugs. However, experts warn that you should not experiment with the position of the feet yourself, since improper correction can increase the load on the joint.
