36-year-old American, Olympic champion in judo, the current UFC champion in women's lightweight Kayla Harrison admits the idea of ending her career in the very near future.
In an interview with the famous sports journalist Ariel Helvani, the athlete admitted that she would have resigned if not for the planned confrontation with the Brazilian, former champion in two weight categories Amanda Nunes. Most likely, after this fight, Harrison will end his career.
"Probably, yes. To be honest, yes, I would not be back, Kayla shared.
The only option under which the champion will continue to compete is more favorable financial conditions from the UFC. Harrison also admits that he can continue his career with a successful defense in order to fight Valentina Shevchenko.
The American and Brazilian were supposed to meet in the Octagon earlier this year, but Kayla was forced to give up the fight due to injury. Harrison underwent surgery to replace intervertebral discs in the cervical region and underwent long-term rehabilitation.
In turn, Nunes refused to fight anyone else from the division and also did not accept an offer to fight for a temporary title. The Brazilian insisted that her next fight will be only for the regular belt and with the reigning champion.
It is expected that Harrison and Nunes in the near future will still meet in a spectacular duel and justify the hopes of UFC head Dana White, who called this women’s confrontation the greatest in history.
