The European Commission will propose a new emergency response mechanism to protect the EU’s external borders. This was stated by the head of the EC Ursula von der Leyen, speaking at the European Parliament in Strasbourg against the background of the migration crisis in the Spanish Ceuta, writes sb.by.

According to Ursula von der Leyen, the mechanism will be used only if strictly defined criteria are met and will allow a more flexible approach to standard procedures temporarily – within a clearly defined framework. The main goal is to respond to situations where mass movements of people are deliberately organized and used as a tool to pressure the borders of the Union.
“We will always respect our values and fundamental rights. But we will never compromise on the protection of our borders because it is we Europeans who decide who comes to our union and under what circumstances, not smugglers and traffickers.
Von der Leyen says 35,000 deaths over average due to heatwave
