According to Reuters, the volcano began erupting on Friday. The ash reached a height of 6 km from Java and 15 km from Sumatra, as well as parts of Banten province in Java.

301 flights have been cancelled at Sukarno Hatta Airport, including 58 international flights.

Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said it would conduct a weather modification operation that could include cloud seeding. This will cause rain and wash away the ashes.

The BNPB also urged people to wear masks and protect their eyes if ash falls. In addition, it is necessary to reduce the time spent outdoors, cover water sources and be careful when driving.

This is not the only eruption in the region. The Semeru volcano in East Java, located about 850 km from Anak Krakatau, also started erupting on September 6.

Indonesia is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area where earthquakes and eruptions often occur. Anak Krakatau has been at the third level of danger out of four since July 2, which means increased activity, possible ash emissions and danger to aviation. The same level is assigned to the volcanoes Semeru, Merapi, Levotobi Laki-laki and Sinabung.
