Wagenknecht expects Merz to resign before the end of 2026

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will leave office before Christmas, December 25. The founder of the BSW party (formerly the Union of Sarah Wagenknecht for Reason and Justice) Sarah Wagenknecht is sure of this, writes sb.by.

As TASS notes, in an interview with the editorial association RND, she noted:
- I assume that Friedrich Merz will no longer be Chancellor by Christmas.
Wagenknecht made this prediction, commenting on the results of the elections to the regional Parliament of the state of Saxony-Anhalt. In the land elections held on September 6, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) won with almost 44% of the vote, but it lacks parliamentary mandates to form a government. BSW has so far become the only party that has declared its readiness to cooperate with the AfD, which opens up an opportunity for the latter to lead the government.
Speaking about establishing such cooperation, the German politician warned the AfD against a scenario in which the party refuses to form a government and eventually new early elections will be held in Saxony-Anhalt.
- We will not succumb to blackmail. I assume that if the AfD is seriously betting on new elections, then many of their voters will think about how they treated their votes, Wagenknecht said.
She said re-elections could lead to a majority going to the "old parties," i.e. Christian Democrats and Social Democrats.
