“What will be the “brush” – will show the future”: the art critic of the neural network
The Russian Academy of Arts in the person of its Vice President Tatiana Kochemasova outlined its position on artificial intelligence

If in the field of contemporary art, artists are boldly experimenting and actively using AI in creating works, then in such a conservative institution as the RAH, it seems, this is still only being looked at. Academic artists actively respond to the agenda, for example, rethink what is happening at the SVO, as well as many other topics, but what do academics say about artificial intelligence? Art historian Tatiana Kochemasova, Vice President of the Russian Academy of Arts, in a conversation with the correspondent of “MK” shared how modern academic artists relate to the neural network:
- At the moment they are perceived calmly, progress cannot be stopped and it is absolutely unnecessary to do so. The main thing, from the point of view of the philosophy of the Academy, is to maintain a professional sound at all technological possibilities.
The expert emphasizes that “a person is a leader, he lays the content, and the work of the mechanism he created depends on it, it is important to competently and professionally address it and invest the meanings necessary to preserve a certain level of artistic skill.”.
- With the presence of a smartphone and the ability to fix anything, the right to be an outstanding photographer remains for professionals, – continues Tatyana Alexandrovna, – Of course, part of the tasks will now be performed not with the help of a brush and paint, and with AI. Therefore, here the position of the Academy continues the line of Zurab Tsereteli, which is that the RAH should be open. The basis is the professional level of education, knowledge, professional attitude and conversation about artistic creativity. Which direction will the master choose? He has to convince the viewer and the professional that he is right, because he does it in a talented, professional, convincing way. What will be the "brush" - will show the future. Although artists say that man-made people still want to preserve, albeit not en masse.
Speaking about digital technologies in general, it is worth noting that artists have been thinking about this issue for a long time, and there are many examples of creative fruits created by academic masters using technology. One of the pioneers of digital art is Konstantin Khudyakov, whose works are regularly exhibited in the halls of the RAH, and this is one of many examples.
