No brine: gastroenterologist called the worst ways to recover after a feast

Attempts to cope with the heaviness in the head after the festive table with the help of brine or usual medications can seriously affect health. Russian gastroenterologist Sergey Vyalov warns: folk methods and over-the-counter painkillers do not remove toxins, but make the liver and stomach work at the limit. The doctor explained why self-medication after a feast gives the opposite effect and how not to make yourself worse, writes sb.by.

- The worst decision for a hangover is to take paracetamol, warns a gastroenterologist. Under the influence of alcohol, the drug is split with the release of toxic substances. Normally, the liver copes with them, but after a feast its resources are depleted, so instead of relief, you can get a severe lesion of the organ.

Attempts to replace it with aspirin or ibuprofen are dangerous for the stomach.

- These funds irritate the mucous membrane, the expert notes. If taken against the background of alcoholic inflammation, they suppress the protection of the stomach, which can provoke acute erosion or exacerbation of gastrointestinal diseases. Drinking cucumber or tomato brine is a popular ritual that often gives the opposite effect.

“The brine helped before when people’s diets were different,” explains the gastroenterologist. Then the combination of salt and water returned the body to normal. But now during the feast we eat a lot of salty: chips, sausages and marinades are used. As a result, sodium in the body is enough in the evening - this salt retains fluid in the tissues and causes swelling. An additional glass of marinade will not improve health, but only load the kidneys, so there is no sense in brine in the morning. To recover, drink ordinary water or table mineral water of weak mineralization. But therapeutic water with a high concentration of salts without a doctor's prescription can not drink - the kidneys for this will not say thank you. Instead of pickles and tablets, the doctor recommends methods that trigger detoxification and protect digestion.

- To restore the water-salt balance, pharmacy solutions are suitable, which are used for poisoning. Kefir will also help: it supports the intestines. But it is important to remember: if the state of health remains difficult, you need to consult a doctor, concludes Sergey Vyalov.

The expert also reminded that if the weakness lasted for several days, it is worth taking a biochemical blood test. This will help check how the liver and kidneys coped with the toxic load, and monitor glucose levels.
