Lower back pain is a common problem that many people face. Patients, trying to get rid of discomfort, often resort to independent muscle stretching. About how to properly prevent back pain and when stretching becomes dangerous, said Russian neurologist, osteopath Alexander Ryazantsev, writes sb.by.
The specialist noted: you can perform stretching only when the lower back does not hurt. The main goal of flexibility exercises outside the period of exacerbation is to increase muscle function and increase the overall elasticity of tissues.
“A completely different approach is required when there is a problem. If the muscle is in tension or spasm, it does not need to be pulled. The task is to relax and return muscle fibers to normal physiological tone, which will ensure proper mobility and relieve pain, explained the doctor.
Trying to sit on the twine or make bends at the moment when the lower back is seized is strictly prohibited.
The muscle responds to any provocation, and at the moment of pain, the person may receive a defensive reaction. The next day, the lower back will be even more spasmic than it was before the stretch, he added.
Instead of stretching during the period of pain, it is necessary to work with mobilization and mild relaxation. To do this, there are special methods of physical therapy (physical therapy), which relax muscle fibers without provoking a protective spasm.
Osteopath drew attention to the fact that the geometry of the lumbar region in each person is unique. There is no universal "magic" exercise for back pain - each movement solves a strictly defined task. That is why the complex of therapeutic gymnastics should be selected by a specialist individually based on the diagnosis and characteristics of the body.
