Many people in a hurry or with nasal congestion switch to breathing through the mouth, without even knowing what risk the bronchi and lungs are exposed to. About why in cold weather it is necessary to breathe through the nose, said the Russian pulmonologist Alexander Puryasev, writes sb.by.

According to the doctor, the nasal cavity occupies a large volume inside the skull. The nasal shells located there not only heat the incoming streams, but also form the correct jet of air, thanks to which the lungs are straightened and saturated with oxygen completely. It is impossible to achieve such a physiological volume of inhalation through the mouth.
“If there is a 20-degree frost outside, passing through the nasal passages, the air in the back of the nose is heated to a comfortable +5 degrees. The air is not only warmed, but also cleansed of microbes, says the expert. In addition, the nose performs the function of a multistage filter. Normally, a healthy mucosa produces up to 500 milliliters of pure protective mucus per day. It constantly evaporates, qualitatively moisturizing the incoming air masses. The mucus contains immunocompetent substances that block bacteria and viruses. There is also a special protein mucin, which reliably traps particles of dust, pollen, mold and neutralizes toxic chemicals.”.
In severe cold, the doctor advises to cover the face with a scarf or mask: this creates a warm layer of exhaled steam, making the first contact with frosty air as soft as possible.
