Doctor-somnologist “SM-Clinic” in St. Petersburg, candidate of medical Sciences Alexander Kazachenko said that chronic insomnia can lead to serious health disorders

Doctor-somnologist "SM-Clinic" in St. Petersburg, candidate of medical Sciences Alexander Kazachenko said that chronic insomnia can lead to serious health disorders. Among them are diabetes, cardiovascular disease and depression.
In an interview with Lenta.Ru on October 28, he noted that one or two sleepless nights usually do not pose a serious threat if excessive physical exertion is avoided against the background of fatigue. The danger occurs when sleep disturbances recur more than three times a week for at least three months.
Kazachenko warned that chronic insomnia negatively affects cognitive abilities. It can provoke the development of depression and affect metabolic processes.
The doctor explained that prolonged lack of sleep increases the likelihood of gaining excess weight, developing diabetes, atherosclerosis and high blood pressure. With already existing heart diseases, the risk of heart attack and stroke also increases.
The effects of insomnia appear gradually. First, there is constant fatigue, decreased concentration and memory impairment. Later, mood swings and metabolic disorders may appear.
Kazachenko added that chronic sleep deprivation is dangerous at any age. However, the young body recovers faster, so the negative consequences can manifest later.
