Popular sugar substitute was harmful to the liver and brain
Regular use of sucralose – one of the most common artificial sweeteners – can be accompanied by undesirable changes in the bowel, liver and brain

Regular use of sucralose – one of the most common artificial sweeteners – can be accompanied by undesirable changes in the intestines, liver and brain. To such conclusions came researchers from the South Korean National University Chungnam. The results are published in the journal Nutrients.
Scientists for 14 weeks added sucralose in the diet of young mice at the rate of five milligrams per kilogram of body weight. Some animals were subjected to prolonged stress. The experiment showed that the sweetener changed the composition of the intestinal microflora and reduced the variety of beneficial microorganisms.
The changes also affected the liver: in experimental animals, the processes of regulating cholesterol metabolism were disrupted, and the activity of genes involved in inflammatory reactions changed. At the same time, researchers did not find a noticeable increase in cholesterol in the blood. In the brains of mice, signs of increased inflammation of nerve tissue were revealed, accompanied by more frequent manifestations of depressive behavior.
The authors suggest that the detected effects may be related through a complex system of interaction of the intestine, liver and brain. However, experts emphasize that the experiment was carried out exclusively on animals. Therefore, it is premature to draw conclusions about the similar effects of sucralose use on humans.
