The Vyborg district court of St. Petersburg sentenced 14 defendants in the case of large-scale illegal currency transactions. For three years, members of the criminal community transferred abroad more than 17.8 billion rubles, earning more than 400 million from financial fraud. This was reported in the joint press service of city courts.
According to the materials of the case, the criminal scheme in 2016 was created by former customs officer Dmitry Kuznetsov together with accomplices. Fictitious contracts for freight forwarding services and a network of more than a hundred controlled companies were used to transfer funds. The money passed through Russian organizations and Estonian banks, after which it was received by foreign recipients. In total, until March 2019, the group members conducted 650 currency transactions.
The investigation found that for their services, the attackers withheld a commission of at least 2.25% of the transferred amounts. In addition, Kuznetsov legalized about 15.9 million rubles of criminal income, placing cash on personal bank deposits. To conceal their activities, community members adhered to strict secrecy rules and instructed nominal company executives in case of inspections and interrogations.
The organizer of illegal business was sentenced to 16 years in a strict regime colony and a fine of 2.5 million rubles. Six of his main accomplices received from 8 to 14.5 years in prison with fines of up to 2 million rubles. Another seven defendants were sentenced to suspended sentences from 5.5 to 7.5 years and monetary penalties from 300 to 350 thousand rubles.
