In the Caucasian State Nature Biosphere Reserve completed the annual accounting of noble deer. According to the results of observations, the population of the Caucasian deer has more than 1.5 thousand individuals and has remained stable over the past six years.
The studies were conducted during the gong - mating season, when males actively give voice and mark the boundaries of their territories. The reserve staff and scientific volunteers were involved in the registration. They surveyed 20 sites, fixing the animals visually and from the characteristic roar that can be heard for several kilometers.
The calculation method was developed by zoologists of the reserve in the 1930s and is still used today.
The Caucasian noble deer belongs to the largest representatives of European deer: the weight of an adult male can exceed 300 kg. In summer, animals climb to high mountain meadows to a height of 3 thousand meters, and in winter they move to forest areas. In the reserve they live, in particular, in the upper reaches of the rivers White, Small Laba, Shahe and Mzymta.
Earlier it was reported that in the Black Sea began the season of industrial fishing of barabula.
