How to preserve an electric scooter for storage and what you need to know about the rules of use

The season of electric scooters is coming to an end, which means it’s time to think about where and how to store them in the cold. Especially difficult for those who live in high-rise buildings, there are often no equipped rooms. The situation is complicated by the dimensions of the transport and the requirements for the battery, which can not be left in the cold. Specialists of the service for maintenance and repair of electric vehicles gave owners some useful tips.

Let’s start with recommendations for those who continue to skate in the autumn. In this case, the scooter requires increased attention to protection from moisture and temperature changes, because puddles and prolonged rains are the main enemies of electronics and bearings. The head of the Minsk service center Vladimir Simutkin advises to make sure that your device has aqua protection:

- Scooters from well-known manufacturers have good factory waterproofing. But in inexpensive Asian brands, it may not be at all, and the owner should take care of this issue. Waterproofing connectors and housing will reduce the risk of moisture getting inside and prolong the service life of the equipment.

- In autumn, the problem of insufficient waterproofing is aggravated due to frequent rains, wet roads, deep puddles and mud, which many times increase the risk of moisture entering the body, Bogdan Ilyuchik, master of the service center, joins the conversation.

By the way, the summer floods also took the life of more than one scooter. They were killed not so much by rainwater leaking into the engine as by the carelessness of the owners, Vladimir Simutkin believes:

- If you unwind, clean and dry a flooded scooter in time, serious problems can be avoided. But if it stood or was still ridden for a while, then corrosion did its dirty work. Sometimes, you remove the wheel from the “drowned”, and there everything is so rusty that only under replacement. Experts advise to regularly clean the wheels of dirt: because of the sand and water, the grease is quickly washed out. And do not forget to monitor the pressure in the tires to avoid puncture and deterioration of the coast. It is recommended to check the wheels at least twice a month, and here’s why. There is a misconception: since there are two atmospheres in car tires, it should be less in the tires of the scooter, once the wheels are smaller. Quite the opposite, actually. The smaller the wheel, the higher the pressure. In the scooter, this indicator is 3-4 atmospheres. Moreover, high pressure is ejected faster, therefore, it is necessary to pump the wheels of the scooter more often.

At temperatures below 10 degrees, the battery discharges much faster. Those who continue to skate in the fall, experts advised not to charge the scooter immediately after returning from the street. First, you need to let it stand warm for a couple of hours to avoid condensation inside the case. Even in the autumn, the service specialists have enough work. Today there are about ten electric scooters under repair. One because of overload burned the winding in the engine, the other failed the sensor in the motor-wheel... There are the first victims of improper storage: after a couple of cold nights on the street began to quickly discharge. The fact is that due to the cold, the battery cells are drained, the balance between them is lost and the battery is no longer able to work 100 percent. With the help of a special device, the masters perform balancing of cells. According to them, the main flow of customers with such a problem is addressed after cold weather.

Remove the scooter for storage, charge it to 50 - 70 percent. As explained by experts, to keep the battery completely discharged or charged 100 percent harmful — it reduces its life. If the battery is in order, then its self-discharge during storage will be minimal. However, manufacturers recommend at least once a month to “energize” it by including it in the socket for 10 minutes. The best place to store a scooter is a dry room with a temperature of 10-20 degrees, says Bogdan Ilyuchik. There should be no batteries or heaters nearby:

- In any case, do not leave an electric scooter on an unglazed balcony, otherwise severe frost and condensation can irrevocably spoil the battery. Do not put it even on a glazed balcony, if you dry clothes and there is constant high humidity. By the way, larger equipment – electric scooters, electric bicycles and tricycles – the battery is often removable. So the transport itself can be left in the parking lot, and the battery can be carried to a warm room.

Before removing the scooter for storage, it must be thoroughly cleaned. It is important to do this manually without devices with a powerful water pressure, otherwise the consequences are the same as for “drowned”.

It is better to keep the scooter in suspension. During the winter, the wheels naturally deflate, and in the spring, when trying to pump them up, a “bun” can form. It is impossible to drive with such a defect: the wheel can explode.

The most serious consequences of improper storage are the failure of the battery (in some models it is half the cost of the scooter) and the formation of condensation in the motor-wheel (one of the most expensive elements).

Finally, Vladimir Simutkin explained to those who plan to ride an electric scooter even in winter, what awaits such adventurers in the spring:
Finally, Vladimir Simutkin explained to those who plan to ride an electric scooter even in winter, what awaits such adventurers in the spring:

Scooters are mostly made of aluminum. He does not tolerate the effects of reagents, which are sprinkled on the roads in winter. Sometimes you disassemble a scooter that drove for a couple of months on snow porridge, and the frame in your hands crumbles into dust. Steel also does not tolerate reagents well, begins to rust intensively. In my experience, winter riding cuts the life of a scooter in half.

Today, more than 12 percent of Belarusian urban residents use personal mobility tools for regular trips. According to one of the marketplaces, in the first half of 2026, Belarusians bought twice as many two-wheeled bicycles as in the same period of 2025. Sales of electric scooters during the same time increased by 80 percent. The top sales of the trading platform in Belarus also included electric bicycles, begovels, skateboards, monowheels, electric rollers.
