Chinese researchers have found a promising way to reduce the harmful effects of alcohol on the liver with the help of substances contained in ordinary corn. The nanoparticles they developed helped protect cells from the toxic effects of ethanol. The findings are published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition.
The basis of the development was corn peptides - short chains of amino acids obtained from plant proteins. Scientists combined them with special carbohydrate compounds that facilitate the delivery of nutrients into liver cells. The resulting particles are also able to fight free radicals that cause cellular damage.
During the laboratory experiment, alcohol exposure reduced the proportion of viable liver cells to 48.87%. However, the use of the new composition has increased this figure to 75.18%. At the same time, the researchers recorded a decrease in oxidative stress, which is considered one of the mechanisms of alcoholic tissue damage.
The authors of the study hope that in the future corn nanoparticles can be used in the creation of drugs to protect the liver. However, practical application is still far away, since the effectiveness of the development has been demonstrated only in experiments with cells, and its safety and effect on the human body are to be studied.
