Scientists have named a product that can help preserve memory in old age

Chinese scientists have found a link between eating foods rich in lecithin and maintaining cognitive abilities in old age. The study involved 1917 people over 60 years old. The results are published in the Chinese Medical Journal.

One of the available sources of this substance are eggs and soybeans. Lecithin is necessary for cell membranes, including in nervous tissue. In addition, it supplies choline, which the body uses to form acetylcholine, a substance involved in nerve signaling and memory processes.

To check the possible connection between nutrition and brain condition, the researchers compared the dietary habits of the volunteers with the results of special tests. It turned out that with a higher intake of lecithin with food, the likelihood of detecting memory and other mental functions was lower. This pattern was observed after taking into account chronic diseases, age and other characteristics of the participants.

Interestingly, the researchers noticed the most pronounced dependence among volunteers who received less education. Scientists admit that the characteristics of the diet may be more significant for this category of people while maintaining mental abilities.

However, lecithin is not yet a proven means of preventing dementia or memory impairment. The study found a statistical relationship but did not establish a direct cause and effect. Further work will be needed to understand a possible defense mechanism.
