Voronezh residents were reminded of the possible consequences of self-administration of magnesium preparations

Voronezh residents were reminded of the possible consequences of self-administration of magnesium preparations. Excessive use of this mineral can cause digestive disorder and an additional decrease in blood pressure. On November 7, IA "Regnum" told the therapist Andrey Kondrakhin.
Interest in magnesium supplements has been growing recently, including through advertising on marketplaces. Manufacturers and sellers often position them as a means to combat stress, improve sleep quality and improve performance. However, the popularity of such drugs does not mean that they can be taken without the recommendation of a specialist.
According to Kondrakhin, one of the most common effects of excess magnesium is the laxative effect. Some compounds of this substance are even included in the composition of means from constipation. Another possible side effect is a decrease in blood pressure, which is especially important to consider for people with hypotension.
The doctor explained that the reaction of the body depends on the way the mineral is obtained. When taking tablets, magnesium is not fully absorbed, whereas intravenous administration, such as magnesium sulfate, may be accompanied by more pronounced side effects.
Magnesium itself is necessary for the normal functioning of the body and is involved in many biochemical processes. Its consumption can increase, especially during periods of stress. However, this does not mean that everyone needs supplements.
The specialist also drew attention to the relationship between magnesium and calcium. These minerals are involved in joint processes, so their content and the need for replenishment should be evaluated taking into account the general condition of the body.
Independently determine magnesium deficiency by irritability, sleep problems or muscle spasms is not worth it. Such manifestations can be associated with different reasons. The need to take supplements, their dosage and duration of the course should be determined by the doctor after assessing complaints and the results of examinations.
Earlier, endocrinologist Olga Demicheva also drew attention to the fact that dietary supplements do not replace full nutrition and drugs. According to her, the effectiveness and safety of many of these drugs are not confirmed by clinical studies.
