Cortisol: why does the body need it and why you should not try to reduce it without evidence, the doctor explained

Cortisol is often referred to as the stress hormone, and many seek to lower their levels with supplements and treatments. However, normally, this hormone is necessary for the body and performs important functions. This was told by the Russian physician, family doctor Alexei Khukhrev, writes sb.by.

According to the specialist, cortisol is involved in the regulation of blood pressure and the distribution of blood in the body. It helps a person adapt to stressful situations and supports the operation of important systems.

- Trying to “reduce” the level of cortisol is not worth it, said Alexei Khukhrev. Elevated cortisol can indeed be a sign of the disease, but such conditions do not occur in everyone. In particular, we can talk about Cushing's syndrome or disease. To suspect a serious violation allow, for example, the appearance of red spots, hypertension. If there is no Cushing’s syndrome or disease, you should not independently interfere with the hormonal system.

The doctor urged not to look for ways to “cleanse” the body of cortisol without medical indications. Instead, it is worth focusing on basic health support measures: normal sleep, proper nutrition, moderate physical activity and contacting a specialist when anxiety symptoms appear.

If hormonal disorders are suspected, the necessary examinations should be prescribed by a doctor. Independent intake of drugs and dietary supplements can be not only useless, but also unsafe, concluded Alexei Khukhrev.
