The increase in waist volume is not always related to nutrition. Fat distribution can be affected by stress and hormonal changes. About what signs may indicate a possible connection with cortisol and when to see a doctor, told the Russian dietitian Daria Rusakova, writes sb.by.

The body is able to store fat in response to adverse conditions. At the same time, short-term acute stress can, on the contrary, reduce appetite, the doctor notes.
“The situation is different in chronic stress, such as problems at work or in the family. In such conditions, some people after 30 years, experts observe an increase in the fat layer on the abdomen. It is important to understand that this is visceral fat – the one that accumulates around the internal organs. At the same time, the body mass index can remain within the normal range, says Daria Rusakova. If a person has thin arms and legs, but a significantly enlarged stomach, you can suspect that the fault of cortisol.
Among the possible signs of hormonal disorders, the specialist called swelling, a grayish shade of the face. Also, the reason to consult a doctor can be dark purple stretch marks. Cortisol levels and metabolism can be affected by lack of sleep, irregular eating, fasting and excess sweets. Therefore, a nutritionist does not advise to diagnose a single test for cortisol: the level of the hormone changes during the day, and several measurements may be required for the assessment. The examination may also include tests for glucose, insulin, and other hormones.
The specialist also noted that hormonal imbalance can affect not only the figure. In women, they are sometimes accompanied by difficulties with conception, and in men - violations of erectile function. With sudden changes in weight and well-being, you should consult a doctor.
